Northern Cyprus General Information
Postage
The postal system in Northern Cyprus is quite good. However you should to assure that any incoming mail is suffixed with “Mersin 10” and not just with Northern Cyprus. It will guarantee the correct destination. Stamps are widely available in post offices, local shops and any North Cyprus hotels´s receptions. When sending post to Europe allow approximately 7 days for it to reach the destination. Posting mail can be done at several places either take it to the main post office or pop it in the small yellow post boxes scattered across the Northern Cyprus, but beware sometimes these are not emptied frequently. Many hotels in North Cyprus offer to take your post for you and post it out and if you go in to some estate agents they will also offer you this service.
Telephone
Telephone landlines are available in some areas of Northern Cyprus where the service is already available. However, there is a shortage of phone numbers and the telephone company is in the process of upgrading its services.
Most people in North Cyprus use a mobile phone. There are currently two GSM operators in Northern Cyprus - Telsim and Turkcell.
As with all mobile services in all countries there are off peak hours that offer you cheaper rates. The same goes for the regular landline. This is normally after eight at night, then you will find that the prices for calls are reduced. During these times you are more likely to run into the, “Sorry all lines are busy, please try again later” announcement.
Working Hours in The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus
During your holidays in Northern Cyprus you will find that all public offices are closed on Saturdays and Sundays and many businesses and shops will close early on Saturday and will remain closed until Monday. You will find however that many local supermarkets are open every day till late and in these you will find array of household goods from bread to light bulbs and you can enjoy your North Cyprus holiday.
