KALKANLI ONE

Desciription:Undulating broad tracks,scrub along valley floor ,some
sustained uphill, forset , cornfields and old olive groves. Good viewsfrom highest point.

Directions: The start is on the Camlibel to Guzelyurt road about 1.5 miles N of Kalkanli. It is in a valley opposite the turning to Kilicaslan. Park off the main road beneath eucalyptus trees (1).
THE WALK
Follow the track heading W up the valley keeping the dry stream bed on your L.After 15 mins the track turns R amidst olive trees on the edge of an open area (2). Beyond the open area you will see some huge old olive trees. Skirt the open area,(see arrows on ma) following the line of the olive trees (some are marked with blue spots to guide you) and in the NW corner of the open area you will find a small group of olive trees which are , in fact , one enormous old tree (3). Enter the olive grove a few metres before this old tree, (look for a blue spot on a tree trunk), and find yourself amidst serried ranks of ancient, gnarled trees.

Pass threough the trees W,(following blue spots),corss a track and a ditch and you will see a knobbly tree with a blue spot. Turn R here and follow marked trees to another enormous one (girth about 15 metres) (4) (25mins). On higher ground to the E is a large dry water tank, hidden from view by trees. From here you scramble down into the valley,turn Land follow the valley floor as it curves round L and then R until you meet a wide track (5) (40mins).

Turn R on to the track and up to an open area. The track leads you past a young pine plantation on your R and fields on the L.Ignore track to the R into the plantation, but take the R fork at Junction (6)(45mins).Soon you pass the end of a fire break to the R and then come to a vally. At the cross tracks (7)(50mins) continue on the main track which curves along the RH side of the valley.

Take the first turning R (8)(55mins), which is identified by 5 pines. This track winds uphill to a ruined Forestry Station (9)(1 hr 10 mins).Here there are extensive views over Guzelyurt Bay.

Walking away from the Forestry Station E along a very wide track, take the second turning R and this will lead you to a very wide fire break (10)(1hr 20mins). Turn L (E) and follow the fire break to the end (11)(1 hr 30mins).Here it narrows to a track and drops down towards a valley. Take the first turn R at the track junction. This track immediately forks and you take the L fork and follow another wide firebreak along the RH side of the valley. Eventually you pass a stone’trig point” in the centre of the track (12)(2hrs), and 100 metres past this there is a large track junction. Turn L on to a narrow, overgrown track that leads down into the valley. Across the valley is the dry water tank and old olive tree (4)(2hrs 10mins). Retrace your way through the olive grove to the track which leads back to the start.(1)(2hrs 35mins).
